CONTROLS ENGINEER

Position Overview:

The Controls Engineer’s role is to provide engineering, design, and programming services for the engineering group. Responsibilities will include key involvement in all phases of development, design, execution, and field support of the controls designs of all industrial and renewable solutions products/projects. The Controls Engineer will also play a key role in developing PLC programming design standards and practices for all industrial related products & projects. This will be 100% on-site and located in Houston, TX.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Field inquiries from the proposal engineer, customer, customer’s engineer, or constructor during the project execution processes.  
  • Serve as primary customer contact for controls related issues. 
  • Attend Bid, Kick-Off/turnover and Project Meetings as required. 
  • Provide a final and completely reconciled Controls/Automation scope of supply by time of the project turnover meeting. 
  • Assist Project Engineering team with writing detailed Sequence of Operation document for projects assigned. 
  • Work with design team to provide complete fabrication drawings, provide complete Bills of Materials, and provide programming of PLC and HMI for projects assigned. 
  • Make recommendations for new product development and/or product standards based on market requirements. 
  • Continually evaluate Turbine Air Systems’ control technology position in the marketplace and provide recommendations to management for change. 
  • Follow the Project Execution Process and make recommendations for improving the Process for greater productivity and communications. 
  • Learn existing TAS proprietary control system and support the Aftermarket and Service Group. 
  • Participate in the detailed and thorough system functional checkout for all equipment prior to shipment. 
  • Support projects in the field as required, including sitework if necessary. 
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by TAS. 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Highly motivated, self-starter with a strong working knowledge of controls and automation systems specifically in the power generation, refrigeration, and process industries. 
  • Highly organized and responsible. Must be comfortable in handling controls projects more than $500,000. 
  • Strong technical aptitude and the ability to read, support development of, and interpret P&ID’s. 
  • Familiarity with current industry philosophies about controls/automation system design, integration, and operation. 
  • Strong experience in PLC based system design and programming. 
  • Mastery ofRockwell Automation RSLogix5000 Suite and VFD’spreferred. 
  • Experience in GE Fanuc PLC’s and VFD’s preferred. 
  • Experience in developing and implementing Man-Machine-Interfaces-MMI. WonderWare, PanelMate. 
  • Experience in coordinating systems integrating with other systems-Gateways, Com Links, etc. 
  • Field commissioning and troubleshooting experience. 
  • Excellent communication and customer management skills. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing and comprehensive documentation. 
  • Strong CAD skills-AutoCAD-R2000 or later. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years as a Controls/Automation Engineer for an Equipment Packager or Systems Integrator. 
  • Must be able to design, configure, program, install & commission PLC controlled projects. 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Industrial HVAC, energy service contracting or central chilled water plant experience.  
  • Experience with large industrial chillers and chiller systems is a plus. 
  • PE registration is highly desirable.  
  • Completed and passed EIT and/or FE exam. 

Education & Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year program or qualified work experience. 
  • A substitution of military leadership and/or technical work experience may be considered in lieu of a technical degree. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing and comprehensive documentation.
