Electrical & Controls Engineering Supervisor

Position Overview:

As the Electrical and Controls Engineering Manager, you will assume a leadership role within our organization, overseeing a team of electrical and controls engineers. Your primary responsibility is to provide guidance, supervision, and ensure adherence to Controls and Electrical Design standards across our product lines. This pivotal role involves strategic planning, team management, and fostering a culture of excellence in electrical and controls engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage the performance of our electrical and controls engineering team. This includes recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and addressing any performance issues.

  • Project Management: Oversee project allocation, schedules, and deliverables, with a focus on estimating and proposal development. Monitor project changes, update estimates, and ensure engineering change notices are processed during project execution.

  • Performance Metrics: Establish and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate team and individual performance, emphasizing efficiency and accuracy.

  • Technical Strategy: Lead the development, review, and approval of the overall technical strategy for electrical and controls engineering within the organization. Serve as the primary contact for all matters related to engineering and design.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with manufacturing and on-site personnel to resolve electrical and controls design issues, ensuring seamless project execution.

  • Participation: Attend critical meetings such as bid reviews, project kick-offs, and turnover meetings. Provide input for new product development and technology planning forums.

  • Ad Hoc Duties: Undertake any additional responsibilities assigned to support the department’s goals.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Technical Expertise: Proficient in electrical power distribution systems, PLC controls, and automation systems, particularly within power generation, refrigeration, and process industries.

  • Leadership: Proven record of effective management and leadership within an electrical and controls engineering group.

  • Mentorship: Strong coaching and mentoring skills, fostering employee development.

  • Technical Aptitude: Ability to read, support the development of, and interpret customer technical drawings and specifications.

  • PLC Expertise: Experience in PLC-based system design, preferably with Rockwell Automation systems.

  • Motor Control Center: Knowledge of Electrical Motor Control Center Design and components.

  • Communication: Excellent communication and customer management skills.

  • Documentation: Proficient in technical writing, documentation, and configuration management.

  • Multi-tasking: Ability to manage multiple projects and conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Codes and Standards: Familiarity with compliance with customer specifications, UL508A, NEC, IEC, NFPA, and other relevant codes.

  • Software Proficiency: Proficient in software tools such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, CAD, and related engineering software.

  • Estimation: Proven experience in estimating labor, task scheduling, and component specification for projects.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Industrial HVAC, energy service contracting, or central chilled water plant experience.

  • 15 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer/Controls Engineer.

  • 5 years of experience in managing an Electrical or Controls Group.

  • BS in Engineering.

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Experience in designing skid-mounted, packaged electrical equipment for both low and medium voltage applications, including domestic and international projects.

  • Experience with large industrial chillers and chiller systems.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification in Electrical Engineering preferred.

  • Familiarity with SolidWorks Electrical.

Education & Training:

Bachelor’s degree in electrical or controls engineering from an accredited four-year engineering program is preferred, although a degree in mechanical engineering with a proven history of controls or electrical experience will be considered.



Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

  • The position primarily involves desk work, with approximately 80% to 95% of the time spent at a computer.

  • May occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force and perform physical activities like sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, and repetitive motions.

  • Visual acuity requirements include color perception, depth perception, and field of vision necessary for data analysis, computer operation, and extensive reading.

  • The work environment is indoors.
