Job Summary:
The Director of Estimating will lead the estimating department, overseeing the preparation of accurate cost estimates for HVAC and Process Mechanical and Plumbing construction projects. This role requires strong leadership, analytical skills, and in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems to ensure competitive and profitable bids. The Director of Estimating will work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to develop winning strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the estimating team, providing guidance and mentorship.
- Develop and implement estimating processes and best practices to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Review project specifications, drawings, and contracts to determine scope, costs, and risks.
- Prepare detailed estimates for mechanical construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Collaborate with project managers and executives to develop competitive bid strategies.
- Conduct risk assessments and value engineering analysis to optimize project costs.
- Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and clients to ensure competitive pricing.
- Oversee bid proposals, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry standards.
- Analyze historical data and market trends to refine estimating strategies.
- Support business development efforts by identifying potential opportunities and providing cost insights.
- Ensure estimates are completed within deadlines and align with company financial goals.

- Able to manage a team of 6-10 people with diverse skills and backgrounds to meet multiple and frequently aggressive and changing deadlines.

- Able to use slow times to focus on process development and improvement.
- Understands the fundamentals of establishing reasonable cost estimates and is flexible in the processes used to do so based on the customer need at the time and the most cost-effective approach in meeting those needs.
- Adept at customer service and customer interactions throughout a bidding and contract negotiation process with support
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in mechanical construction estimating, with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems.
- Proficiency in estimating software such as Trimble, Bluebeam, or similar tools. Revit experience is a plus.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and contracts accurately.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Understanding of market pricing, material costs, and labor rates in the mechanical construction industry.
